Head of DEWC-CODA Leads Delegation to Inspect Beijing Sunshine Science & Technology Development Co., Ltd., Focusing on Flexible Solar Panel Vehicles to Support Green Mobility in Africa
April 8, 2026 – Xu Xiangqian, Executive Director of the Digital Economy Working Committee of the China Overseas Development Association (hereinafter referred to as "DEWC-CODA"), led a delegation to the R&D center of Beijing Sunshine Science & Technology Development Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Sunshine Tech") to conduct field research. The inspection focused on the company's latest advancements in flexible copper-indium-gallium-selenide (CIGS) solar technology, solar panel vehicles, and mobile energy storage solutions. The two sides held in-depth discussions on new energy transportation solutions for African countries and other Belt and Road partner nations.
Solar Panel Vehicles: Powered by Light
Sunshine Tech showcased its self-developed 1.8-meter solar-powered tricycle with an enclosed cargo box. The vehicle is equipped with flexible CIGS solar panels on four sides, with a total power output of 1,600W. In favorable weather conditions, it generates approximately 8 kWh of electricity per day. Combined with a 6–8 kWh battery, the vehicle achieves a range of 100–150 kilometers, with each kilowatt-hour enabling 13–14 kilometers of travel. This fully meets the daily transportation needs of African farmers, who travel early in the morning and return late in the evening, commuting between home and distant farmland.
Zhao Qi, Deputy General Manager of Sunshine Tech, highlighted that CIGS flexible solar technology offers outstanding low-light performance, high-temperature resilience, lightweight and bendable characteristics, water and rust resistance, and impact resistance. The vehicle can also be equipped with an inverter to function as a small mobile power station, providing electricity for water pumping, irrigation, sand washing, and refrigeration, thereby expanding its application across agriculture, commerce, and emergency scenarios.
Exporting 600,000 Units, Chasing India's 5 Million Market
According to the company, Sunshine Tech exported over 600,000 electric three-wheel and four-wheel vehicles in 2024, demonstrating strong overseas expansion capabilities. By comparison, annual sales of similar products in India exceed 5 million units. Both sides agreed that in light of the vast international market demand, Sunshine Tech must accelerate its efforts to further expand its overseas market share, with a particular focus on accelerating deployment in emerging markets such as Africa.
Complete Vehicle Exports, Efficient Logistics Ensures Supply
Currently, Sunshine Tech primarily exports complete vehicles and maintains highly efficient logistics capabilities. Thanks to the product's modular design, the assembly process is highly convenient, providing a solid technical foundation for a rapid transition to local CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly when market conditions in Africa mature.
Focus on Ethiopia: Low-Cost Electricity and Policy Support
Executive Director Xu Xiangqian noted that Ethiopia, home to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, has abundant and low-cost electricity, but its power grid remains underdeveloped. This makes the "off-grid charging" model of solar panel vehicles highly suitable. Furthermore, Ethiopia has banned the import and registration of fuel-powered vehicles and strongly encourages the development of electric vehicles, creating a vast market opportunity for solar panel vehicles. Africa generally faces challenges such as power shortages, difficulty in charging, limited range, and high charging costs. Solar charging technology offers the optimal solution and represents the future trend for electric vehicle development.
Outlook: Catching Up and Seizing the Initiative
Executive Director Xu Xiangqian stated that, in light of the competitive landscape where India sells 5 million vehicles annually, Sunshine Tech's export of 600,000 units serves as both a foundation and a starting point. The DEWC-CODA will actively build platforms to facilitate deep engagement between Sunshine Tech and African agricultural technology alliances, industry associations, and enterprises, with pilot projects prioritized in Ethiopia using complete vehicle exports. Through trade promoting cultural exchange and projects fostering win-win cooperation, the goal is to bring green mobility to Africa, support energy transformation, and jointly seize new opportunities in the international market.
